BSF Lesson 17: And whatever you do, do it all in the name of Jesus

Sunday, February 28, 2016

Scripture Memory Verse - Revelation 12:11 (NIV)
"They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. "

If I haven't said it already - Revelation is getting CRAZY scary. It makes you understand why people want to spread the word of God so much and so quickly. Because if you've read Revelation - you don't want any of your loved ones or friends (or even you worst enemies) going through what's written there. Gives us a sense of urgency!

Day One
What help did you receive from the notes?
"When you are tired or discourage, ask God for protection, direction and strength, believing He will give you what you need through His Word, His Holy Spirit and all His gracious provisions."

Don't just pray to God for his help, believe and have faith that he is always with you. He knows what you need before you do!

Day Six
What have you learned about God in this week's study?
We read Colossians 3:15-17 -

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

I like the part - And whatever you do, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus!! Show people the reason you're so loving, caring, patient, forgiving, gracious, etc. is because you are a child of God!

{Please note that what I got from this lesson is not necessarily the same as what others did. People can get very different takeaways from the scripture and questions based on prior knowledge, life situations, faith, etc.}

Things I Love: Lacrosse

Thursday, February 25, 2016

Lacrosse has been such a HUGE part of my life for at least the last 18 years of my life. (That makes me feel old.) I started in elementary school and have had some kind of connection ever since. I was blessed with an amazing high school coach who was well known in the lax world. She helped me get on a club team, which in turn helped get me recruited to play in college. Enter these fine ladies below!

Lax in college COMPLETELY changed me - and so did these girls, plus about 20 others! My teammates from college are still my best friends now. Love you long time!

One summer in college I got to play lax in Australia! That's right I said, AUSTRALIA. I had an amazing summer down under traveling, playing lax and living the dream.

Now I'm coaching at a high school here in NC and love passing on what I know to these girls. Our first game is this Monday (wish us luck) and I think I'm just as nervous, excited, ready to go as my girls are. I wish I could play with them!

One of the reasons I love lax so much is that it pushed me to get up and show up. I wasn't just going home after school piddling around - heck no I was working my booty off at practice. Then again in college with 5:45am practices (ugh)! But all of that made me the (morning) person I am today.

My hope as a coach is that I can pass on the same love for the game, determination and drive.

Here's to girls everywhere kicking ass and taking names on the lax field!

Wknd Recap - A Whole Lotta Nothing

Monday, February 22, 2016

Byron and I LOVE to travel, visit family and par-tay, but man is it nice to have a "free weekend."

We were still busy, but it was just laid back and relaxing.

Friday we played card games - Rummy 500 to be exact and I actually beat him. (Cue confetti shower and parade with marching band!)

Saturday I was bright-eyed and bushy tailed at 4am. I have no idea why. Lacrosse season just started and I coach a high school (post to come Thursday) so we had practice. Then B and I hung out doing stuff around the house until it was time for our date night at Sushi Republic in Greensboro. Seriously some of the best sushi I've ever had! That's our go-to sushi spot down here.

You might be thinking to yourself, "DANG Shawn, that's a lot of sushi!"And I would agree with you. Byron's stomach was bigger than his eyes so he just kept marking a line next to his fave rolls. We also got some really yummy garlic edamame - I'm going to try to recreate at home soon!

Also, Saturday was National Love Your Pet Day and you know I love my fur baby, Cami. So here's a picture of that beauty right here.

Sunday Byron and I went to church then RELAXED for the rest of the day. It was a rainy Sunday so we took the time to just hang out.

Here's to a VERY busy week - praying for energy, patience, grace from others and of course lots and lots of laughter.

BSF Lesson 16: Trust in God

Sunday, February 21, 2016

Scripture Memory Verse - Revelation 11:15 (NIV)
"The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: 'The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.' "

Day One
What was meaningful to you in the lecture?
God provides for our needs. He knows what we need most, which can be different than what we think we need or in all truthfulness - what we want. It's comforting to know I will never go without something that I need - He will provide it. Trust in God.

What help did you receive from the notes?
"The astonishing power of God's creation, even disaster, can be used to open hearts and ears to hear truth." Sometimes it's hard to understand why things happen to us or to people who don't deserve it, but there is good in all that God does. We might not see it, but we have faith and know it is there. Trust in God.

Day Six
What have you learned about God in this week's study?
I was reminded that God is sovereign and Satan is limited. Satan only has the ability/ power that God allows him to have. God is in charge of all including Satan. Give the power, your hope and your faith to God. Trust in God.

February So Far

Monday, February 15, 2016

February has been nothing short of cray cray. Matter of fact - it's been so crazy I haven't had time to do a weekend recap at all this month. Soooo, I thought I'd share all of the happenings and then you can agree with me how busy it's been.

We started off February in Maryland with a GARTH BROOKS concert!! Leigh and I got tickets for my mom for Christmas - she had wanted to see him for years. Isn't it nice when you benefit from someone's present.

That same weekend we celebrated my little bro, Harley's 12th birthday. That's right I said 12th. I don't know where the time has gone. He's a big Denver Broncos fan so we got him Fatheads for his room. As a Baltimore Ravens fan I can support his love for the Broncos. Love you Har!

Which brings us to the second weekend in February. That weekend Duke beat State (Go Duke!) and we had lots of parties to go to. First was a wedding shower for one of Byron's good high school friends, Catherine. It was a lot of fun and I can't wait for the wedding in April!

Then we all went bowling for a surprise 30th birthday party for our friend Deo. Per usual, the guys got REAL competitive and the girls just cheered each other on. Byron could probably tell you what he scored each frame - I could not.

This past weekend was another fun one. Leigh and Eddie (my sister and brother-in-law) came down to visit us. It's always fun showing off Greensboro to them. If you live here, you know all of the FABULOUS restaurants and breweries. [If not, stay tuned; I'm going to do a whole post on that real soon!]

Saturday we took them on a brewery tour - Pig Pounder, Preyer Brewing Co., Gibbs Hundred Brewing Co. then over to Hop's Burger Bar for amazing burgers and night capped with slices of Maxie B's cake. Pure gluttony.

Just when I thought I never needed to eat again - we went brunching on Sunday at Dame's Chicken & Waffles THEN last night they made us an amazing Valentine's Day Dinner. We're spoiled. Leigh and Eddie could both be professional chefs.

And now that all of that craziness has calmed down - it's time for lacrosse to start up. Lax tryouts are this week if the snow and weather cooperate!

Sorry for the long post - had to catch y'all up!

Happy Valentine's Day | 1 Corinthians 13

Sunday, February 14, 2016

13 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
